James Corbett (@JamesCorbett) is a well-known name in the Virtual Reality world. It would not be wrong to say that he is one of the pioneers using virtual reality education. James Corbett is the co-founder at Simvirtua Ltd., a Virtual and Augmented Reality Production Studio and Consultancy. Simvirtua specializes in building immersive AR and VR software and experiences for marketing, training, well-being, retail and education.
I have known James since a while, and have been inspired by his pioneering work in Virtual Reality for Education and Healthcare, luckily, I had the chance to meet him during my recent visit to Ireland and found him to be a truly amazing person. Not only is he a visionary and a successful enterpriser, he is also ready to welcome and encourage new talent and startups. James’ journey into the realm of virtual reality goes as far back as 2008 for having won Level 1 Award by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland for the Vizitant Project that entailed bringing virtual presence to the socially excluded. Same year he co-founded the 3DCamp AR/VR meetup that used to be held annually in the University of Limerick. It is the biggest meeting point for the AR/VR entrepreneurs and enthusiasts for all skill levels, and has turned into a more regular series of meetups taking place quarterly in Limerick and bi-monthly in Dublin.
James co-founded two new projects and a not-for-profit venture in three consecutive years after that, with Daynuv in 2009, miLKlabs in 2010, and MissionV Education in 2011, respectively. MissionV Education was one of the earliest ventures in virtual reality education and quickly gained recognition for its innovative and out-of the-box approach – a teaching tool characterized by immersive learning experiences supported by the National Centre for Technology in Education. The program focused on building 21st century skills helping children to develop original 3D modeling and programming skills compared to the conventional methods of passive learning.
It was with James’ kindness that I got to meet many more startups in Ireland. He is a very active member of VR community and is still supporting a number of new startups. It is amazing to see what a single person can do with forward thinking and positive attitude. He is definitely a role model and an inspiring figure for the youth and innovative people all over the world.
